An electromagnet which moves a ferrous armature so as to create motion. By passing an electric current through the winding of the electromagnet, the armature can be made to pull on a mechanical part. In washing machines, a solenoid valve is often used to turn water on. In self-playing musical instruments, solenoids might operate the action of a piano, or any other part that needs a push or a pull.
