The phenomenon whereby two notes of close, but not identical frequency produce a variation in volume. The frequencies being different, peaks of the two waves will sometimes coincide and sometimes cancel each other, so that the sum of the two waves fluctuates at a rate which depends on the difference between the two notes. The effect is exploited in a Celeste organ stop.
