Originally a collection of 78rpm records sold as a set and packaged with each record in a sleeve bound into a stiff cover and known as an album. The records might contain a symphony, or highlights from an opera, and were arranged so that the stack could be placed on an autochanger so that one side of each record in the stack would play before the whole stack was lifted off and turned over so that the other sides would play. When an equivalent work could all be fitted on a 33⅓ rpm vinyl disk, the name "album" continued in use.
