What's in the museum?

An amazing collection of musical instruments and inventions. Self-playing pianos and violins, pipe organs, music boxes, gramophones, keyboards, synthesizers and more.

 

See – and hear- amazing instruments and inventions that have captured, replayed and generated music from past centuries to the present day. A piano that can play a performance recorded by Rachmaninov (or dozens of other famous pianists). A violin that can play itself! Have you heard an Edison Phonograph play? Or a jukebox that plays 78rpm records? The electronic organ that changed the sound of pop music? See if you agree with Charles Babbage (the “father of computing”) that one instrument should have been banned... Marvel at the mighty Wurlitzer Cinema organ designed to accompany silent films, but which became an attraction in its own right.

 

All these and many more are here to be demonstrated on your fascinating guided tour. There's also a café, accessible toilets and parking, too.

Who Should Come to the Museum?

Adults and children of all ages! Our guides tailor their explanations to the age and interests of visitors, and kids are especially welcome on one of our monthly children's tours. 

People of all abilities will find a welcoming, wheelchair-friendly environment in all public areas of the museum from the car park to the galleries and concert hall.

Musician? You will love the range of instruments you will hear, and the unique musical arrangements that can only be heard on these amazing machines.

Pianist? Admire the tremendous collection of quality pianos by Steinway, Steck, Grotrian-Steinweg, Erard, Bluthner, Chickering and more.

Engineer? The clever mechanisms and the ingenuity of the people who created replaying instruments before the dawn of sound recording will astonish you. 

Gadget-mad? Our collection includes electronic instruments from the Theramin to the rare BA-series Hammond Organ, and even a modern “Memotron” synthesiser that you can play.

Hungry? Our Café has wonderful views of the river, and makes a great place to meet with friends for coffee, cake – and free WiFi!

Venue Hire

Need a venue for your event?

 

Our concert hall (or the whole museum) is available to hire for corporate and community meetings, receptions, parties, concerts, TV filming and special events.

 

Sprung dance floor. Seating for up to 250 (110 seated at tables). Stage and cinema screen, PA, professional lighting, sound and live streaming / recording capabilities with multiple HD cameras.

Friday, Saturday & Sunday: 10am to 4pm

Guided tours: 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm

On days with afternoon events there may be no 2.30pm guided tour.

Open House Festival 14 & 15 September

Free entry to the Museum on these days, and no formal tours; instruments will be demonstrated all day.​​
